Introduction of Social Media Coordinator

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

Your Yeoman is so excited for all the wonderful volunteers that we have helping out!  Over the next couple of weeks we will be spot lightening all our coordinators that are such an essential part of making sure Your Yeoman is as helpful to service members as we possibly can.

This week I would like to introduce you to Sara Musick.  She will be helping with blogging, social media and PR.  We are so excited that she is here to help!

Hello!

My name is Sarah Musick. I will be posting most of the blogs here, at Your Yeoman.  I will start this writing adventure by telling you a little about myself.

I just turned 33, I mean 29. I am married to a wonderful (most of the time) man. I am the mother of two beautiful, amazing girls. My eldest is eleven, and the youngest is one.  We are in the Hampton Roads area, but my husband and I are originally from small towns in Arkansas. (I promise not to type with a twang.) I am also a Navy wife. My Sailor has been in the service nearly 15 years. Before I became a military wife, I worked in the medical field, as a radiologic technologist, for 10 years. I am now a stay-at-home Mom, and I love it. I spend my time with the family, volunteering in our community, and as of recently, working on my “resolution” of getting in shape.

I promise to vary the topics of the blogs I post.  Please do feel free, however, to make suggestions and let me know what piques your interest or tickles your fancy.

Sarah

Polar Plunge 2013!

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

It’s that time of year again! Mark your calendars and get ready to freeze your rear-end off! Polar Plunge Winter Festival 2013 is quickly approaching, and being a part of this event is super cool! (Did you see what I did there?)  To kick things off, there will be a Pre-Plunge Party, in the HEATED main tent, on Friday night, February 1st from 6p – 10p, featuring the DELOREANS! Bring your boogie shoes and dance the night away.

After a good night’s sleep, grab your running shoes and head on down to the Boardwalk, where you can participate in a revitalizing 5k. This event starts at 8:30 on Saturday morning.  After you run your heart out, you can cool off, catch your breath, check out the fabulous costumes (or compete in the contest; picture Mardi Gras on the Beach), and get ready to PLUNGE at 2:30!!!! Saturday evening, there will be a Beach Bash, in the main tent, as well. The band, BUTTER, will be rocking this event.

If you don’t feel the need to jump into the frigid Atlantic, feel free to check out the parties and attractions. It is a festival, after all. There is a $5 donation required to gain access to the main tent and the festival area on the beach.

In the last 20 years, more than 33,000 plungers have raised more than $7.5 million for Special Olympics Virginia. “Whether you run, plunge or party – or do all three – you’ll be helping to build a bigger, better and COOLER community for our athletes and volunteers.”  For more information about Polar Plunge Festival 2013, visit http://polarplunge.com/. For information regarding Special Olympics Virginia, please go to their website at http://www.specialolympicsva.org/.

The Coalition To Save Our Military Shopping Benefits

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

I don’t know about everyone else, but Your Yeoman has saved so much money using Military Shopping Benefits!  Between the savings and coupons we always manage to stay within our food budget each month (and with a growing teenage boy that can be a little difficult at times).  So when I found The Coalition to Save Our Military Benefits, I did some research and joined.  Not only do these benefits save Military Families money, but the earnings come back to the Military in savings, better facilities support and several causes like the Fisher House, USO and on and off-base military family programs.  I can’t imagine them being cut in any way.

Please take a few minutes and check out the website below and join the cause to save our Military Shopping Benefits!  We want to make sure that we preserve these benefits and eliminate any attempt to reduce or take away any support for them.

View From a Soldier

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

One of my first clients with Your Yeoman was a total sweetheart and he loves his wife!  I asked him a few months back if he would help me with a story to describe how he found Your Yeoman and what we had done for him and his family.  We both discovered it was very easy to write about what we love .  Enjoy!

View From a Soldier

I thought I planned everything out.  I know that plans can change being in the military, but we took a chance and decided it was time to have a baby.  My wife was six months pregnant when I received notice that I was deploying again in the next three weeks.

“How am I going to tell my wife?”

Then I realize that I am going to miss the birth of our first child.  My first son.  I couldn’t bare the thought of her going thru this without me.  Being there for her, holding her hand and seeing her face when she sees him for the first time.

“How am I going to tell my wife?”

I tell her what has happened in the most reassuring voice that I can and she calmly tells me it will be ok and she can do this.  She knows I am upset and you can see she is staying strong and trying not to cry.  She does anyway.  We cry together.

“What am I going to do?  I have to do something, but what?”

Three months later a beautiful Soldier boy is born and his mother had no idea that his father had figured out the perfect thing to do.  On that Rainey day the solider boy was born, I had the pleasure of meeting the Soldier’s wife and newborn son that I had been hearing so much about.  With me I brought a video that her husband and I had recorded before he left telling his wife that he is so proud of her and that she is the most amazing woman he could ever know!  She cried.  I then gave her a small box containing a beautiful necklace that said #1 Mom.  She cried some more.  After the Soldiers wife stopped crying I still had one more surprise to give her.  I felt bad making her cry so much, but they were happy tears. The Solider had recorded a different video for each day that he is gone for his newborn son to watch and listen to until he returns home and holds him for the first time.

This time, we both cried.

Using Space-A Travel

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Have you ever used Space-A Travel?  I personally have not, but after reading this I may just have to give it a try.

Space-A travel is free travel aboard Defense Department owned or controlled aircraft. Here are some tips on using Space-A Travel during the holidays: (1) sign up for departures as early as possible; (2) continuously call the passenger terminal to verify show times and flight status; (3) show up earlier than the posted flight check-in or roll call; (3) dress warmly and in layers; (4) NE able to pay for commercial airlift back if Space-A travel is not an option for the return flight; (5) plan funds for excess lodging or food costs caused by flight delays; (6) pack to observe the same U.S. Transportation Security Administration rules and regulations as commercial airlines; and  (7) do to exceed weight limits. Observe the four main points: “be early, be patient, be flexible and have a backup plan.”
